             abstract = "The Nhecol{\^a}ndia region is one of the most preserved areas in 
                         Pantanal, wich is formerly recognized as Humankind Patrimony. 
                         Besides the environmental importance of this area, the genesis of 
                         this part of the Pantanal is still not well understood. It is a 
                         peculiar area and its main landscape elements are thousands of 
                         lakes, some constituted by salt water and so known as Salinas and 
                         others, the most, made by fresh water and called Ba{\'{\i}}as. 
                         This remote sensing study, using Landsat TM images and object 
                         oriented classification has quantified the total number of lakes. 
                         In this paper are also presented the criteria used to classify the 
                         lakes as Ba{\'{\i}}as or Salinas through photointerpretation. 
                         The results achieved 16.961 ba{\'{\i}}as and 578 salinas.",
